On October 27, 1979, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from the United Kingdom, ending centuries of colonial rule. The island had long been contested by the British, the French and the Indigenous Kalinago and Garifuna peoples.
It remains a member of the Commonwealth, and every October 27 Vincentians celebrate Independence Day. Its story is part of a wave of Caribbean independence in the 1960s–80s.
Can you name the main island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines?
