A vaccine created a century ago is still given to babies today.

French physician and bacteriologist Albert Calmette died on October 29, 1933. Working at the Pasteur Institute, he and veterinarian Camille Guérin spent years weakening a strain of tuberculosis bacteria to create a safe vaccine.

Their BCG vaccine, short for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, was first given to a human infant in 1921. Tuberculosis was one of the deadliest diseases of the age.

BCG remains one of the most widely used vaccines in the world, especially for young children where TB is common.

Which medical breakthrough do you think saved the most lives?
