Abandoned as a baby, he became one of the great minds of the Enlightenment.

Jean le Rond d'Alembert was found as a newborn on the steps of a Paris church, Saint-Jean-le-Rond, which gave him his name. He grew up to be a leading mathematician and physicist.

With Denis Diderot, he co-edited the Encyclopédie, a vast work that gathered knowledge on science, crafts and ideas and helped spread Enlightenment thinking across Europe. He wrote its famous preliminary discourse.

D'Alembert died in Paris on October 29, 1783.
