America's oldest college began with a vote and 400 pounds.

On October 28, 1636, the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony agreed to give 400 pounds toward a school or college. The new school was set up in Newtowne, soon renamed Cambridge.

In 1638 a young minister, John Harvard, left the college half his estate and his library of about 400 books. The grateful colony named the school after him.

Today Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.

If you could found a college, what would you name it after?
