As a boy he suffered from severe asthma. As a man he became one of America's most energetic presidents.

Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City. He became a rancher, a writer, a soldier with the Rough Riders, governor of New York and, in 1901, at 42, the youngest person ever to become US president.

He is remembered for breaking up powerful trusts, building the Panama Canal and helping end the Russo-Japanese War, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize. He also protected around 230 million acres of public land.

Have you visited a national park or monument he helped protect?
