Breakfast in London, breakfast again in New York. For 27 years, that was possible.

On October 24, 2003, British Airways flew Concorde's final commercial flight, from New York's JFK to London Heathrow, with 100 passengers on board. The Anglo-French jet had entered commercial service in January 1976.

Concorde cruised at about 1,350 mph, roughly twice the speed of sound, and normally crossed the Atlantic in around three and a half hours. In the end, rising operating costs and falling ticket sales grounded it.

Why it still matters: more than two decades later, no airline offers supersonic passenger flights, and engineers are still trying to bring them back.

Would you pay a premium to cross an ocean in half the time?
