On this day · OCTOBER 26
1916
He would lead France for 14 years, longer than any other president of the Fifth Republic.
François Mitterrand was born on October 26, 1916, in the small town of Jarnac in western France. After decades in politics, he was elected president in 1981 and re-elected in 1988, serving until 1995.
His presidency left marks you can still see: France abolished the death penalty in 1981, the Channel Tunnel linked Britain and France, and the glass pyramid rose at the Louvre. He was also a key figure in the European integration that led to the Maastricht Treaty.
Which of these changes do you think had the biggest long-term impact?
