Mahalia Jackson was born in New Orleans on October 26, 1911. Raised singing in church, she moved to Chicago as a teenager and became the most celebrated gospel singer of her era, earning the title "Queen of Gospel."

Her recordings brought gospel music to audiences around the world, and she was a committed supporter of the civil rights movement. At the 1963 March on Washington, she sang shortly before Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.
