On this day · OCTOBER 25
1825
If you've ever heard The Blue Danube, you've heard his name without knowing it.
Johann Strauss II was born in Vienna on October 25, 1825. The son of a famous composer, he went on to eclipse his father, writing hundreds of waltzes, polkas and operettas, including Die Fledermaus.
Known as the "Waltz King," he turned a dance once considered scandalous into the sound of elegant ballrooms around the world. His music still opens Vienna's New Year's Concert and shows up in films, from 2001: A Space Odyssey onward.
What piece of classical music do you never get tired of?
