Imagine Portugal without Lisbon.
In the summer of 1147, Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, joined forces with a fleet of crusaders from England, Flanders and Germany who had stopped on their way to the Holy Land. Together they besieged Lisbon from July 1. After months of resistance, the defenders agreed to surrender, and on October 25, 1147, the gates opened.
The victory gave the young kingdom a great Atlantic port. Lisbon later became Portugal's capital and the launching point for the voyages that connected continents.
