On this day · OCTOBER 24
1931
In the depths of the Great Depression, New York built a giant.
The George Washington Bridge was dedicated on October 24, 1931, and opened to traffic the next day, October 25, linking Manhattan with Fort Lee, New Jersey, across the Hudson River. At the time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
It was finished ahead of schedule, and a lower deck was added in 1962. Today it carries enormous volumes of traffic every day and is often described as one of the busiest bridges on the planet.
What's the most impressive bridge you've ever crossed?
