Of all England's monarchs, only one is remembered as "the Great."

Alfred, King of Wessex, died on October 26, 899. He came to the throne as Viking armies were overrunning the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and he fought back, eventually defeating the Danes and reaching a settlement with them.

Alfred also built a network of fortified towns, called burhs, reorganized his army and promoted learning, encouraging the translation of important books into English. His work laid the groundwork for his descendants to unite England.

If you could ask Alfred the Great one question, what would it be?
