On October 28, 312, Constantine defeated his rival Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on the Tiber River. Ancient writers later claimed Constantine had seen a sign before the battle and ordered a Christian symbol placed on his soldiers' shields.
The victory made him sole ruler of the Western Roman Empire. The next year, the Edict of Milan granted religious tolerance, including to Christians, and Constantine went on to found Constantinople.
Do you think one battle can really change the course of history?
