One of opera's masterpieces opened in Prague, with Mozart himself in charge.

On October 29, 1787, Don Giovanni premiered at Prague's Estates Theatre. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart conducted the first performance, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, his partner on The Marriage of Figaro.

Prague audiences had embraced Figaro, and the city commissioned the new opera. Don Giovanni blended comedy and darkness in a way that still grips audiences.

The Estates Theatre still stands, and the opera is performed by companies around the world.
