On October 29, 312, Constantine entered Rome, one day after defeating his rival Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge just outside the city.
The win made Constantine master of the Western Roman Empire. The next year, the Edict of Milan granted tolerance to Christians, and Constantine went on to support the Church and later founded a new capital at Constantinople.
His reign helped turn Christianity from a persecuted faith into a central force in Europe.
