On this day · OCTOBER 9
1962
Sixteen days. That's how long Uganda had been independent when it joined the world stage.

Uganda gained independence from Britain on October 9, 1962. On October 25, 1962, it was admitted as a member of the United Nations, joining dozens of newly independent African nations that transformed the organization in the early 1960s.

That wave of decolonization changed the UN from a club dominated by a few powers into a truly global assembly, and Africa's voice in world affairs grew with it.

How do you think the UN changed when so many new nations joined in such a short time?
