Thirteen golden domes rise above the harbor of Helsinki.

On October 25, 1868, the Uspenski Cathedral was inaugurated in Helsinki, then part of the Russian Empire as the Grand Duchy of Finland. Designed by the Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev, who died before it was finished, it was built from 1862 using some 700,000 bricks brought from the demolished Bomarsund fortress.

Its thirteen gilded domes are said to represent Christ and the twelve apostles, and it is often described as the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe.

Why it still matters: it is a living reminder of the century when Finland was tied to Russia, and one of Helsinki's most visited landmarks.
