On this day · OCTOBER 24
1964
This country entered the Olympics under one name and left under another.

On October 24, 1964, the British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia became the independent Republic of Zambia, with Kenneth Kaunda as its first president.

That same day the Tokyo Summer Olympics held their closing ceremony. Zambia's athletes, who had arrived as Northern Rhodesia, marched out as Zambia, making it the first country ever to change its name and flag between the opening and closing ceremonies.

Why it still matters: Zambia's independence was part of a wave that reshaped Africa in the 1960s, and October 24 is still celebrated as Independence Day across the country.
